Altroconsumo, a consumer association, carried out a survey to identify the cheapest supermarkets in Italy, dividing them into three categories: brand products, economical products e private label products. The objective is to help consumers save on their annual expenses.
The research analyzed nearly 1,6 million prices for food, household products, personal care products and pet products at 1.203 stores across the country, in the period from March 7th to April 1st, 2023.
The cheapest supermarkets for branded products
Two supermarkets stood out as the cheapest for branded products:
- Family Superstore: This chain won first place in the Altroconsumo ranking for purchases of branded products.
- Esselunga Superstore: Next to Famila Superstore, the Esselunga Superstore was considered the best option for purchasing branded products.
The cheapest supermarkets for economical products
In the economy category, discount supermarkets dominated, and the top five positions include:
- In's Market: For the first time since the Altroconsumo began to develop this type of classification, In's Mercato occupies the first position.
- Aldi: Among the top five positions of the most economical supermarket chains in Italy in the category of purchasing economical products, we also find the German chain.
- Dpiù: With more than 300 points of sale between North and Central Italy, the Dpiù is a chain of stores specializing in discounts
- Eurospin: It is a discount supermarket chain based in Italy. They offer a variety of food and non-food products at affordable prices.
- Prix Quality: Among the five best, we find Prix Quality.
The best networks for private label products
As for private label products, excluding discount supermarkets, the Altroconsumo ranked the following networks as the best:
- Spazio Conad: This network proved to be the most convenient for shopping with private label products.
- Pam: The chain is also among the top five most economical supermarket chains in Italy when it comes to shopping for branded products.
- Ipercoop: This chain has already been recognized as one of the best supermarket chains in Italy.
Knowing the cheapest supermarkets can help Italian families save considerably on their annual expenses, helping to balance the family budget.
With the right choices, it is possible to save up to 3.455 euros per year for a family of four that spends, on average, 8.548 euros.
These results provide Italians with a valuable guide to optimizing their daily spending and ensuring greater purchasing power.
