At least 21 million people chose to leave home and visit another city.
Italy celebrates the traditional Ferragosto holiday on August 15th, which celebrates the Assumption of Mary, and citizens are taking advantage of this week to begin one of the most important breaks in the Italian calendar.
Thousands of Italians have already congested the roads, which see intense traffic, especially on the roads towards the coastal region of the European country. According to official data, at least 21 million people chose to leave home and visit another city, the equivalent of almost six Italians in 10.
A survey carried out by the National Confederation of Direct Cultivators (Coldiretti) revealed that 62% of Italians go to cities with a beach and only 24% of the population take advantage of the holiday to rest at home. The rest are divided into trips to mountainous areas and “art cities”.
