Still with restrictions on travelers from many countries, including Brazil, Italy broke a record for domestic tourism in the European summer, a result that brings a sigh of relief to a sector severely affected by the pandemic.
According to a survey released by the tourism and trade association CNA, 23 million people made internal trips in Italy during the months of July and August, in the country's high summer season.
The number represents a substantial increase compared to the 17 million in 2020 – in the brief interval between the first and second waves of the pandemic – and even compared to the 18 million in the summer of 2019, before the emergence of Covid-19.
According to the research, “art cities” are still far from pre-pandemic levels, but beaches from north to south of Italy registered full hotels in the high season – the country had one of the hottest summers in recent years, with temperatures often above 40ºC.
The increase in domestic tourism was also made possible by the control of the pandemic in Italy: despite an increase in cases and deaths from July onwards, the numbers did not get out of control again.
Furthermore, more than 70% of the target audience (12 years and over) is fully vaccinated against Covid. (Handle).
