The 'kind photographer' scam at the Trevi Fountain is deceiving tourists in Rome.

An apparently friendly approach turned into a tourist trap in Trevi FountainThe fountain, one of Rome's most visited spots, was the target of a robbery. Local police in the Italian capital dismantled a scheme in which an organized group approached visitors offering to take photos with their cell phones, and then used the distraction to steal wallets. Four young people were arrested after passersby reported suspicious activity near the fountain.

How the scam worked

According to the authorities' reconstruction, each member of the group had a defined role. Some of them approached tourists with the phrase "Do you want me to take a picture of you?" and took control of the cell phone for the supposed recording. While the victim's attention was focused on the pose and the monument, other members created confusion with nearby movements and minor bumps.

Amidst the commotion, an accomplice would steal the victim's wallet and immediately pass it to another member of the group, who would then quickly move away from the area. The rapid exchange of the stolen item made it difficult to identify who had actually committed the theft. Everything happened in a matter of seconds.

Why is the Trevi Fountain a frequent target?

The high concentration of people in small spaces creates favorable conditions for this type of approach. In crowded places, physical proximity between strangers is normalized, and it is precisely this environment that scammers exploit. The distraction caused by a seemingly friendly interaction reduces the victim's attention long enough for the scam to occur.

How to protect yourself

Keeping bags and backpacks closed and in front of your body is the most effective measure. Wallets should not be kept in back pockets or easily accessible compartments. When a stranger offers to take a photo, it's worth carefully assessing the context and keeping your belongings in sight.

Those traveling together can divide the tasks: while one poses or takes photos, the other keeps an eye on the group's belongings. Distraction techniques work precisely because they create a brief moment of confusion, and it is during this interval that the action happens.
