This Friday, 15 Italian cities are expected to be on red alert (including Rome, Florence, and Palermo) due to the heat, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.
When a city is on red alert it means that the heat is so intense that it represents a danger to the population in general, not just for the elderly or the most fragile.
The capital of Italy has already begun to feel the effects of the heat this Wednesday (11), with tourists looking for shade and water.
The heat raised fears of more fires, with the Sicilia and the region of Calabria – nicknamed “Calafrica” – have already faced several this summer.
In Calabria, fires threaten the Aspromonte mountains, designated by the UNESCO as an area of international geological importance.
For several days, flames fueled by wind and heat raged in La Madonia, a mountainous region near Palermo, the Sicilian capital, and destroyed agricultural fields, homes and industrial buildings.
The governor of Sicily, Nello Musumeci, called for a state of national emergency to be declared in La Madonia.
