According to the bulletin, the maximum level indicates an imminent risk for the entire population because the heat wave recorded this week could break a record and be the strongest in the month of June since 2003.

As one of the measures, the Red Cross activated a toll-free number for anyone who needs support, assistance and advice to face the high temperatures, especially the elderly and children.

Temperatures are expected to rise above 40ºC in Piedmont, Milan, Ferrara, Bologna, and Trieste. In the Tuscany region, including Florence and Prato, the forecast is for 39ºC, as well as on the island of Sardinia. In Rome, the heat is expected to reach between 37ºC and 38ºC. The heatwave has been caused by an anticyclone from North Africa.

Other countries in Europe

The French government has started closing dozens of schools because of the heat wave, which will see temperatures above 40º C in some regions this Thursday (27), according to estimates.

Around 50 schools in Essonne, south of Paris, had classes suspended due to not having enough air conditioning.

French authorities have also decided that in Paris and Lyon only the least polluting vehicles will be allowed on the roads from today. France's capital is especially prone to pollution in hot weather.

In parts of northeastern Spain, the heat is expected to reach 45 degrees next Friday (28). Germany will still record temperatures below 40ºC. In Switzerland, in turn, authorities will keep schools open.
