The tourism sector contributed 10,8% of Italy's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024 and 13% of jobs, according to a report released this Sunday (9) during a trade fair in Milan, in the north of the country.

The data comes from the Italian National Tourism Agency (Enit) and was revealed on the occasion of the International Tourism Exchange (BIT), an event that takes place in the capital of Lombardy until next Tuesday (11) and that brings together exhibitors from all over the world.

According to the study, the sector's share of the economy is set to grow with the Catholic Jubilee of 2025 and the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in 2026, with the prospect of reaching 12,6% of GDP and 15,7% of jobs by 2034.

Also according to Enit, Italy registered 235 million daily stays by foreign tourists between January and November 2024, an increase of 3,7% over the same period the previous year.

Italian airports registered 218,4 million passengers last year, an increase of 11% compared to 2023. Of this total, 145,8 million were international travelers (+13,8%), with almost 99 million from the European Union (+14,7%).

“We will begin to feel the effects of the Jubilee at the end of 2024, and this event represents the guiding thread for 2025,” said Enit CEO Ivana Jelinic. The expectation is that the “Holy Year” will bring more than 30 million pilgrims to Rome.HANDLE)
