The Forza Italia (FI) party requested this Thursday (24) the postponement of a cultural event with Brazilian music, scheduled for April 25, the Anniversary of the Liberation of Italy (Anniversary of the liberation of Italy)in the streets of Rome. The justification is the period of mourning for the death of Pope Francis.
The pontiff died on April 21, at the age of 88, after suffering a stroke and cardiac arrest. His body is being laid out in St. Peter's Basilica and will be buried on Saturday (26), in the Basilica Santa Maggiore.
The initiative criticized by FI is promoted by Municipality I of the Italian capital. Entitled “The road of dreams”, the event includes a procession, percussion and Brazilian rhythms on via dei Coronari, in the city's historic center.
The party secretary in the city of Rome, Luisa Regimenti, stated that the event “is not appropriate at this time of reflection”. According to her, citizens have expressed discomfort at the celebration in the midst of global mourning.
Regimenti appealed to the organizer Viva Project and the president of Municipality I, Lorenza Bonaccorsi, for the event to be postponed or held more soberly.
“Ceremonies are permitted, but we believe that dancing in the street while people pay homage to the Pope is completely inappropriate,” the politician said in a statement.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first Latin American pope in history, led the Catholic Church for more than 11 years. The Argentine was elected in March 2013 and was known for his reformist stance and for promoting dialogue between religions.
