Adam and Sofia: the favorite baby names of foreign families in Italy.

The ISMU ETS Foundation announced, on the occasion of Mother's Day In Italy, this Sunday (10), the most frequent names among children of residents with an immigration history. Adam, Amir and Rayan dominate the choices among boys from Moroccan families, while Sofia, Amira and Luna lead among girls.

The survey highlights the continued decline in the country's birth rate. Provisional data from Istat indicate that 355.000 births were registered in 2025, a reduction of 15.000 compared to the previous year. Of this total, 48.000 children have foreign citizenship, representing 14% of the cases.

Foreign mothers in Italy are, on average, younger than local mothers. The average age at childbirth for foreign women is 25 years, while among Italian women the average rises to 33 years. In 2024, it is estimated that 71.000 children will have been born to foreign mothers, equivalent to 19% of the national total.

The choice of names reflects the integration or preservation of each community's culture. Parents of Romanian origin tend to choose names common in Italy, such as Matteo, Luca, Leonardo, and Sofia. Meanwhile, communities from Morocco and Bangladesh maintain traditions from their countries of origin, with names like Abdullah and Anabia gaining prominence.

Another growing trend is the adoption of the mother's surname. In 2024, 6,7% of newborns were registered with a double surname, a significant increase compared to 2,4% in 2020. The phenomenon is more pronounced when at least one of the parents has the same surname. citizenship of Latin American countrieswhere the practice is customary.
