In 2005, the beach on the Tiber was a hit in the Italian capital
The artificial beach on the Tiber River, a project announced by the mayor of Roma, Virginia Raggi, last December, should be opened by the beginning of August.
According to sources from the municipal administration, led by the anti-system Movimento 5 Estrelas (M5S), the works are progressing quickly, with the completion of the access roads and the positioning of the sand.
The beach will be close to the Guglielmo Marconi Bridge, about five kilometers from the center of the capital. In the summer of 2005, the City of Roma I had already done a similar project, but close to Castel Sant'Angelo, on the outskirts of the Vatican.
The idea is inspired by the beaches of the River Seine, in Paris, and aims to bring people closer to the waters of the Tiber. The area will also have space for sand sports, such as beach volleyball.
The opposition, however, criticizes the opening of the project only in the second month of the European summer. “At the end of the summer [which ends on September 21st], the Raggi administration is ready to inaugurate the announced beach on the Tiber”, joked councilor Stefano Pedica, from the Democratic Party (PD).
August, however, is the main month for summer holidays in Italy, largely due to the Ferragosto holiday on the 15th.
