The changes proposed by the Italian government to the rules for recognizing citizenship by descent are worrying communities in several countries, not just Brazil.
Next Monday, May 5, 2025, at 21:15 pm, the program Meridians, from Slovenian TV Capodistria, will discuss the direct effects of the measure on descendants of Italians living in the country and also in Croatia.
O Decree-Law 36The bill, approved on March 28 and currently being processed in the Senate for its conversion into law, limits Italian citizenship. the right of blood (by right of blood) up to the second generation – children and grandchildren. Direct descendants of the third generation or more would be excluded from the possibility of automatic recognition of citizenship.
The proposal has sparked a backlash from institutions such as the Unione Italiana, the Italian National Community (CNI), the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region and the Giuliani nel Mondo Association. They warn of the risk of weakening historical, cultural and emotional ties with Italy, especially in the regions of the former Istria, Fiume and Dalmatia, now part of Slovenia and Croatia.
The program will be led by Ezio Giuricin and will feature representatives of the local Italian community, leaders of organizations and experts. The aim is to assess the impact of the new rules on current provisions, such as Law 91/1992 and Law 124/2006, which specifically deal with the recognition of citizenship to descendants of these territories.
The changes call into question a right that, for decades, served as a bridge between Italy and its children spread across the world.
