Without immigration, Italy's population would shrink, Istat data shows.

of births. Morocco leads; Mezzogiorno loses 150 young graduates.

Immigration helps offset Italy's demographic deficit: without the positive migration balance, the country would have lost around 300 inhabitants by 2024.

Italy would only avoid population decline because it receives migrants. Data from Istat reveals that in 2025 the net migration was 296.000 people. This number coincides almost exactly with the natural population deficit of 296.000 (652.000 deaths versus 355.000 births). Without this influx, the population would have contracted.

The pattern persists and intensifies: net migration rose from 263.000 in 2024 to 296.000 in 2025. Morocco and Bangladesh lead the countries of origin. Simultaneously, southern Italy is expelling its own children: 150.000 young graduates migrated to the north in search of opportunities. The result is an Italy that grows by importing labor while hemorrhaging internal talent.

The institute confirmed that the influx of migrants (both legal and subsequently legalized) increased from 263.000 in 2024 to 296 in 2025. During the same period, the natural population deficit reached exactly 296 people. This coincidence reveals structural dependence: without migration, demographic figures would be negative.

Morocco at the top, Bangladesh next.

Data shows that Morocco appears as the main country of origin, followed by Bangladesh. Simultaneously, there is a reduction in emigration to Latin America, reversing a historical pattern that characterized Italian migration for centuries. Fewer Italians are giving up on staying in Italy when opportunities increase.

While foreigners arrive in the North, Southern Italy is expelling its educated population. One hundred and fifty thousand highly educated young people have left Campania, Sicily, Basilicata, and neighboring regions for Lazio, Lombardy, and Veneto. This internal exodus deepens regional imbalances and compromises the competitiveness of the South.

Istat recorded an acceleration of movement between Italian regions. However, the phenomenon is mainly driven by international migratory flows: cities in the North attract both Italians and foreigners. This dynamic suggests that economic growth and demographic attraction of wealthy regions are driven by the arrival of people from abroad.

Demographic Impact Estimate

Based on public data from Istat 2024 and 2025The Italian population in January 2025 was approximately 58,94 million population.

Scenario Population Variation
With migration (+296 thousand) ~58,94 million Stable
Without migration (deficit of 296) ~58,64 million -300 thousand inhabitants
