Since August 1st, Italy has temporarily reintroduced checks on flights and sea routes originating from Spain. The measure is scheduled to last until September 1st.

This does not mean that Spain has left the Schengen Area or that the border has been closed.

What changes for Brazilians?

The main change affects citizens of countries outside the European Union.

Therefore, Brazilians traveling only with a Brazilian passport may have their document and immigration status checked upon arrival in Italy, even if they are coming from another country within the Schengen Area.

Is it still possible to file the lawsuit?

I want to know if I can enter.

Those who also hold Italian citizenship or citizenship of another European Union country must travel with a valid European document. For these passengers, the impact tends to be minimal.

The controls are selective and started at airports such as Rome Fiumicino, Malpensa and Linate. mainly concerning non-EU passengers arriving from Spain.

Why did Italy adopt this measure?

The decision came after the Migrant crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa, where tens of thousands of migrants attempted to enter Spain at the end of July.

The government of Giorgia Meloni justified the temporary resumption of controls by citing the risk of irregular displacement of migrants from Spain to other European countries.

Should we be worried?

For Brazilian tourists with legal status, there are no changes to the entry rules for Italy.

What can happen is a new document check during a trip that would normally be done without border control.

The recommendation is to travel with a valid passport and keep readily available documents that prove the legality of your stay in the Schengen area.

The measure is initially valid until September 1, 2026.
