The Italian government is considering suspending the Schengen area with Spain in response to the migration crisis in Ceuta, a Spanish exclave in North Africa. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced the possibility this Thursday (30), in a publication in X, and sources at Palazzo Chigi confirmed that the measure is under study.

Thousands of people of North African origin crossed the border from Morocco, many swimming around the El Tarajal breakwater. At least ten died during the crossing, and Madrid sent the army to reinforce control of the city.

Extraordinary measures

Meloni stated that the images coming from Ceuta show that uncontrolled irregular immigration represents a concrete threat to the security of European borders. She said she had spoken with the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and summoned the relevant authorities. "Italy will not stand idly by," she wrote.

According to the Prime Minister, the government is prepared to resort to extraordinary measures at the end of these meetings, including the suspension of the Schengen Area with Spain. Since the two countries do not share a land border, the measure under consideration would involve controlling arrivals by sea and through airports, with a technical committee on immigration planned to discuss the issue.

Government aligned

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani supported the proposal. "I am in favor of closing the Schengen Area with Spain," he wrote on X. He criticized the Spanish government's decision to grant citizenship to more than 500.000 undocumented immigrants, which he described as misguided and an incentive for human trafficking.

Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also defended the suspension as a duty to protect the borders and the Italian people.

European reaction

The European Commission praised the cooperation between Spain and Morocco to contain the flows and ensure the rapid return of those who entered Ceuta irregularly, in accordance with existing regulations. To date, there has been no similar reaction from France, Germany, or other major European Union countries, and the emergency continues to be managed primarily along the Madrid-Rabat axis.

Ceuta is an external border of the European Union, and prolonged pressure could reopen the debate in Brussels about protecting the bloc's borders.

What is the Schengen Area?
It is the area of free movement that brings together 29 European countries, without passport controls at internal borders. The agreement itself allows a country to reintroduce temporary controls in exceptional situations, such as threats to public order or internal security, by notifying the European Union. Between Italy and Spain, which have no land border, the suspension would mean controls on passengers on flights and sea routes coming from Spanish territory.
