Fires surround Rome and the region prepares for a new wave of extreme heat.

A new heat wave increases the risk of fires in Rome after a week of fires in Lazio.

Rome has recorded 259 fires since June, and Lazio is warning of new outbreaks.
Fire near the ring road closed roads; firefighters evacuated 13 families in Velletri and three people suffered from smoke inhalation.

New fires hit the outskirts of Rome in the early hours of Tuesday (28), while authorities in Lazio warn that the risk of outbreaks remains high with the arrival of another heat wave. The region has recorded 569 fires since June 15, 259 of them in the Italian capital.

The figures are from the civil protection agency, responsible for responding to fires and other emergencies. After Rome, the most affected cities are Latina, with 166 fires, Frosinone, with 94, Viterbo, with 33, and Rieti, with 17.

Fire near the ring road

On Sunday (26), a fire near the Grande Raccordo Anulare, Rome's ring road, filled the air with smoke and caused temporary lane closures. Traffic was congested between the Pontina and Laurentina exits and on the A24 highway, in the section between Togliatti and the ring road.

Firefighters brought the flames under control on Monday (27), and the carabinieri forestali, the Italian forestry police, are still investigating the cause. Roads returned to normal operation on Tuesday.

Early Tuesday morning, another fire broke out in Velletri, in the southeastern part of the metropolitan area, in a building under construction. Firefighters extinguished the fire and evacuated 13 families as a precaution, according to Rai television. Three people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

At around 4:30 am, the flames also reached an illegal landfill and an abandoned industrial structure on Via Tiberina, which hampered firefighting efforts.

Heat and wind spread the flames.

The fires recorded in Lazio They jumped 20% just over the weekend of the 25th and 26th, compared to the total accumulated since the start of the regional prevention campaign on June 15th.

According to Massimo La Pietra, director of civil protection for the region, the high temperatures and winds of up to 50 km/h helped the fire spread rapidly. He cited the fire near the ring road as an example of how these conditions favored the flames.

With a new heat wave predicted for the coming days, a bulletin released by the Lazio region indicates that the risk of wildfires will remain high throughout the week.

Anyone witnessing a fire can call 112, the single emergency number in Italy, or Rome's civil protection service at 800 854 854.
