July brings a non-stop stream of festivals, medieval races, open-air operas, and international concerts to Italy. The month concentrates some of the most traditional events on the Italian calendar, with programming spread from north to south of the country.
On July 2nd, Siena hosts the PalioThe horse race without saddles divides the city into rival contradas in the Piazza del Campo. It is one of Italy's oldest and most exciting rituals, also repeated in mid-August. Meanwhile, in Spoleto, the Festival dei Due Mondi continues until July 12th with its 69th edition, bringing together music, dance, opera, poetry, and theater in daily performances.
For lovers of live music, July offers options on several fronts. The Umbria Jazz Festival Anima Perugia takes place from July 3rd to 12th, consolidating its position among the great jazz festivals in Europe. In Milan, I-Days brings Florence and the Machine, Foo Fighters, and System of a Down to the stage on the 3rd, 5th, and 6th. The Lucca Summer Festival hosts John Legend, Alabama Shakes, and Katy Perry throughout the month, with tickets ranging from 35 to 100 euros.
Opera, tradition and festivities
The Verona Opera Festival celebrates its 103rd edition in the city's Roman arena, with performances of Aida, La Traviata, Nabucco, and La Bohème throughout the month (tickets from 28 euros). In parallel, the Puccini Festival begins in Torre del Lago, Tuscany, on the 17th, with La Bohème, Turandot, and Madama Butterfly running until September.
Palermo celebrates its patron saint, Saint Rosalia, on July 14th with a procession and fireworks. Venice marks the 19th and 20th with the Festa del Redentore, a tradition commemorating the end of a plague epidemic in the 16th century, which includes fireworks over the Canal della Giudecca and a historic regatta. In Ascoli Piceno (July 11th) and Pistoia (July 25th), medieval knightly tournaments revive the imagery of the Italian Middle Ages.
For those who prefer classic films outdoors without paying a high price, Cinema all'Aperto takes place in various cities across the country throughout the month, with free screenings or screenings at symbolic prices. (Photo: Depositphotos)
