The call milleproroghe It became law and extended the deadline for minors to declare their intention to acquire Italian citizenship. The new deadline is now... 31 May 2029.

The change was published in the Gazzetta Ufficiale this Monday, the 2nd, through Law 26/2026.

The text amends article 1, paragraph 1-ter, of decree-law no. 36 of March 28, 2025, converted, with modifications, by law no. 74 of May 23, 2025.

Where the deadline was “31 maggio 2026”, it now reads “31 maggio 2029”.

What does Law 26/2026 say?

The regulation extends until May 31, 2029, the deadline for parents to declare their wish and exercise the benefit provided by law for Italian citizenship for minors.

With this, families now have three more years to formalize their request within the established rules.

Published excerpt

19-Tue. All'articolo 1, comma 1-ter, del decree-legge 28 marzo 2025, n. 36, convertito, with modification, dalla legge 23 maggio 2025, n. 74, relative to the end of the presentation of the dichiarazione della volonta' di acquisto della cittadinanza da parte del minore, le parole: “31 maggio 2026” sono sostituite dalle seguenti: “31 maggio 2029”.

Why the extension is relevant

The previous deadline, set for May 31, 2026, was considered too short by families residing abroad.

There were reports of difficulty in obtaining appointments at consulates within the expected timeframe and delays in the issuance of certificates by Italian municipalities. This hindered the updating of the AIRE (Registry of Italians Residing Abroad) and the completion of the required documentation.

Without an appointment and with pending documents, the request could not be formalized within the legal deadline.

With the extension, the time available for parents to regularize the documentation and submit the declaration of intent within the new deadline has been increased.

Now, consulates will need to manage the demand within the new timeframe. Reports of failures in the scheduling systems and a lack of available appointment slots persist.
