Traditional celebration reaches its 93rd edition with 36 food stalls
From the last weekend until the first Sunday in September, a little piece of Bixiga, as a part of the Bela Vista neighborhood is affectionately called, will be occupied every weekend by the 93rd Festa de Nossa Senhora Achiropita. Created at the beginning of the 20th century by Italian immigrants from Calabria from the city of Rossano, the celebration usually attracts thousands of visitors interested, mainly, in eating.
During the festive period, sections of Treze de Maio, Doutor Luís Barreto and São Vicente streets give space to 36 stalls dedicated to dishes prepared by “mums”, Italian volunteers and descendants, regarding typical June festival games such as fishing (8 reais).
To calm your appetite, recipes such as fogazza (10 reais), a type of fried pastry, are multiplying. With a similar name, fricazza (6 reais) is a high-crust pizza that has a lot of fans. There is also no shortage of eggplant appetizer (16 reais).
Those who prefer to stay away from the crowds that take place outdoors can enjoy the party in the Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Achiropita hall. In this closed space, a canteen is set up with numbered tables, shows and a dance floor.
The ticket price, in this case, is 110 reais on Saturdays, when you can try an all-you-can-eat buffet. On the first two Sundays of the festival, it costs 50 reais, and on the last three, it goes up to 60 reais. On that day, the price only entitles you to one pasta dish. And be aware: invitations to access the interior of the Madonna Achiropita cantina are only made in advance, from Tuesday to Friday, from 18pm to 21pm on site.
The profit obtained from the event, which this year is expected to receive 25.000 people each night, is donated to social works maintained by the parish.
