On Wednesday, December 11, the Chamber of Deputies approved the agreement for reciprocal recognition of driver's licenses between Brazil and Italy (PDL 683/24), signed in July 2024 during the visit of Italian President Sergio Mattarella.
It was the last step necessary for the renewal of the agreement, which marks a historic step towards making life easier for Brazilians living in Italy and Italians living in Brazil. The text will now be sent to the Senate.
The project's rapporteur, deputy Eros Biondini (PL), celebrated the achievement in his Instagram account: “Great day! After a struggle of more than two years, we managed to report and approve the project for the renewal of the agreement. A historic victory that will benefit thousands of Brazilians. I thank Congressman Fabio Porta, president of the Italy-Brazil group, for all his efforts.”
What changes with the agreement?
The direct conversion of the Brazilian National Driver's License (CNH) to the Italian license, and vice versa, will be done without the need to take theoretical or practical exams, as long as the established criteria are met:
- Reside in the country for less than six years;
- Have a valid and definitive driver's license, category A or B.
The process will be carried out in Vehicle registration in Italy or at Detran offices in Brazil, respecting local regulations.
“The renewal of the agreement is awaited by the Brazilian community residing in Italy, estimated at 159 thousand people,” said Biondini.
