The Rome police closed the Trevi Fountain area this Saturday (13) due to crowds of people on the eve of a new lockdown in the city.
In addition to the iconic fountain in the historic Roman center, police also stopped pedestrian traffic in some streets and squares in the Italian capital.
Several cities in the country, such as Milan and Turin, also registered great movement this Saturday, two days before the entry into force of a new decree that places 10 of the country's 20 regions, in addition to the province of Trento, in the red zone of epidemiological risk.
Under this regime, people can leave their homes only for “proven reasons of work, health or necessity”, and restaurants, bars and non-essential businesses are closed, except for pick-up or delivery services.
The new lockdown will encompass the country's most populous regions, such as Lazio and Lombardy, where Rome and Milan are located, respectively. In total, the measure will affect 71,5% of the national population.
The average number of new Covid-19 cases in Italy has been growing continuously for more than 20 days, while the number of deaths has been on an upward trend since the end of February. To date, the country has recorded around 3,2 million infections and almost 102 thousand deaths. (HANDLE).
