The Incredible Story of Rose Island is a film based on a true story
An idealistic engineer builds his own island off the coast of Italy and declares it an independent nation, drawing the attention of the world—and the government. But after all, Did the Isle of Roses exist?
"The Incredible History of the Island of Roses", new italian film which is very successful on Netflix, portrays the story of a man who sought throughout his life to preserve what was most important to him: freedom, both his own and that of any citizen.
The feature film, which is set in Rimini, in Italy in the 60s, shows the trajectory of Giorgio Rosa (interpreted by Elio Germano), a dreamy engineer who has the talent to build anything he wants.
One day, he decides to build an island on his own. Adriatic sea, which ended up being called “Rose Island".
Of course, the Italian government didn't like it, especially with the international repercussion of the case.
It's a well-intentioned comedy that wants to show the viewer the power of dreams.
Did the Isle of Roses really exist?
Yes, the Isle of Roses really existed.
In 1968, Giorgio Rosa, a engineer Italian, built his own island in the Adriatic Sea, which housed a restaurant, a bar, a grocery store remembrances and even a post office.
This was an extraordinary story, which by some chance remained in the imagination of the Italian people.
“The Incredible Story of the Isle of Roses is the kind of story in Rimini that grandparents tell their children and grandchildren”, explains the film's producer, Matteo Rovere to BBC. “It's a very famous story, but only in Rimini. We thought it was an incredible story, and very strange that we didn’t know about it.”
The story begins in 1967, when Rosa set out to build a micro-nation, which was intended to be a symbol of freedom.
Many people at the time thought he must have been crazy to attempt such a feat.
But, as his son also points out to the BBC, the construction of The Island of Roses required a lot of technical knowledge.

- Em 1968, Italian engineer Giorgio Rosa designed and financed the construction of a 400 m² platform suspended by steel pillars.
- The structure was built on the coast of Rimini, just beyond Italian territorial waters, which meant it was beyond the authorities' control.
- Rosa proclaimed himself president and declared it an independent state – the Republic of Ilha Rosa.
- The authorities were dissatisfied with the fact that the Pink Island having been built without permission and benefiting from tourism while avoiding tax laws.
- In addition to claiming that the island was being used for drinking and gambling, some politicians even suggested that the island posed a threat to Safety national and could provide cover for Soviet nuclear submarines in an effort to damage its reputation.
- Just 55 days following the island's declaration of independence on June 24, 1968, the Italians sent forces military to take control. They destroyed Rose Island in February 11, 1969 using dynamite.
- Days later, a storm submerged the structure completely.
