Italian surnames are used in the main public positions in Brazil. There is no denying the importance of the Italian colony in the country's development.
A quick search is enough to find Italian surnames in the most important public positions in Brazil – including the highest, the presidency of the republic, under the command of Jair Messias Bolsonaro.
In the Federal Supreme Court, two Italian surnames: that of Minister Dias Toffoli and Minister Edson Fachin.
At least six states are governed by Italian-Brazilians. São Paulo's governor is João DoriaParaná is led by the Italian-Brazilian Ratinho Jr. (his last name is...) Sponge).
Gladson Cameli (Acre), Renato Casagrande (Holy Spirit), Romeo Zema (Minas Gerais) and Mauro Carlesse (Tocantins) complete the list.
Among the ministries of the Republic, the Italian surnames appear frequently.
In the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic is Onyx Lorenzoni. The department was once headed by the late Gustavo baby.
There is no way to forget Sergio Moro, who served as Minister of Justice and Public Security. Just like Luiz Henrique Mandetta, former Minister of Health – today the department is under the command of Eduardo Pazuello.
Also on the list of former ministers is Gustavo Canute, from the Ministry of Regional Development.
Important and strategic secretariats are also full of Italian surnames in charge. Fabiano Bordeaux at the National Penitentiary Department; Luciano Benetti Timm, at the National Consumer Protection Secretariat; and Octavio Shreds, in Foreign Relations, are some examples.
Even in command of one of the Armed Forces there is an Italian descendant: Commander Antônio Carlos Moretti Bermudez, from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).
The strength of Italian ancestry
According to an IPEA study (Institute for Applied Economic Research), carried out in 2016, in a sample of 46.801.772 names of Brazilians analyzed, 3.594.043, or 7,7%, had an Italian surname.
In the city of São Paulo alone, which has around 11 million inhabitants, almost 6 million are of Italian origin, or 55% of the local population – and a good proportion carry the Italian surname.
It is no wonder that many are in the main public positions.
