In 2022, 449.118 residence permits were issued in Italy. The figure is unprecedented in the last 10 years, and represents an increase of 85,9% compared to 2021.
The movement was boosted by the temporary protection granted to Ukrainian citizens after the start of the war. There were 148 thousand documents in this category, 36,8% for minors and 71,6% for women.
The information was disclosed in the report “Non-European Union citizens in Italy“, from the Italian National Statistics Institute (Istat), released this Tuesday (17).
The document points out even more than 5 million foreigners resident in Italy in 2023, a slight increase compared to 2022. Among them, 59,1% live in northern Italy.
More than 1,6 million live in absolute poverty, making immigrants five times poorer than Italians.
The country reports an increase in residence permits for asylum seekers, especially for citizens of Bangladesh and Pakistan.
Work permits increased by 32,2% between 2021 and 2022, and those studying increased by 42,6%, exceeding 25 thousand, a record since 2013.
