According to the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore , Meloni announced that 452 new work permits will be issued to non-EU immigrants between this year and 2025. Despite this measure, Italy will maintain its strict policy of preventing the arrival of illegal immigrants via the Mediterranean Sea.

This movement comes in response to a Bank of Italy report that points to the lack of qualified workers as a factor that could harm the country's recovery plans, especially in the information technology (IT) and construction sectors. Based on this, Italy plans to gradually increase the number of annual work permits, targeting 136.000 applications in 2023, 151.000 in 2024 and 165.000 in 2025, while expanding the categories of eligible jobs for immigrants from outside Italy.
