Italy work for immigrants
Italy, by Giorgia Meloni, releases 452 work permits for immigrants

The difficulty in finding workers in agriculture and tourism led the Italian government to approve a new decree expanding the number of work visas for immigrants from outside the European Union (EU). Green light for 452 thousand admissions in three years.

The Prime Minister's government initiative Giorgia Meloni aims to populate the Italian job market and boost the country's post-pandemic recovery plans.

According to the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore , Meloni announced that 452 new work permits will be issued to non-EU immigrants between this year and 2025. Despite this measure, Italy will maintain its strict policy of preventing the arrival of illegal immigrants via the Mediterranean Sea.

This movement comes in response to a Bank of Italy report that points to the lack of qualified workers as a factor that could harm the country's recovery plans, especially in the information technology (IT) and construction sectors. Based on this, Italy plans to gradually increase the number of annual work permits, targeting 136.000 applications in 2023, 151.000 in 2024 and 165.000 in 2025, while expanding the categories of eligible jobs for immigrants from outside Italy. UE.

During this year, Italy intends to issue 40 new work permits, with more than 82 applications already in progress. It is worth noting that, before the pandemic, the country issued an average of less than 31 work permits to foreigners.

This change of stance occurs in a context marked by tragedies such as the sinking of a boat with citizens from Pakistan, Syria, Afghanistan and other countries, in which 94 people, including women and young children, lost their lives near the Italian coast. This event generated internal and international criticism and contributed to the review of Italy's immigration policy.

With the expansion of work visas, Italy seeks to meet its demand for qualified labor and take advantage of the benefits brought by the cultural diversity and professional experience of immigrants. This approach aims to strengthen the Italian economy, boosting strategic sectors and ensuring a solid recovery path following the challenges faced during the pandemic.
