It was taking a while for some genius mind to create a tax in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic in Italy. And now it has.
Taking from the rich to give to the poor. Parliamentarians from the Democratic Party (PD) propose a “solidarity contribution”, from the wealthiest groups, to combat poverty in this period of Coronavirus emergency.
“Anyone who earns more than 80 thousand euros a year will have to pay, and this money will go to the poorest sectors”, says Graziano Delrio, party leader and author of the project.
The expected revenue, according to him, is 1,3 billion euros per year – around 7 billion reais.
The reaction came quickly. “The Democratic Party has come out of the closet, it wants to put its hands in Italian pockets to face the Coronavirus emergency,” said Mariastella Gelmini, deputy from Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party.
“A way to sink even those who manage to survive for now,” said deputy Giovanni Toti, president of Regione Liguria.
For the 5 Star Movement, “it’s time to give money to the people, and not put your hands in their pockets”
“If the Democrats want more withdrawals, they start with their salaries,” said Stefano Buffagni, from the 5 Star Movement party.
Italy is the third country in the European Union where the weight of taxes and contributions on employees' gross income is the highest – 47,7%. Behind only Belgium (53,7 percent) and Germany (49,6 percent), according to data from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
