Democratic Party (PD) MP Fabio Porta denied the existence of any preliminary agreement on the Italian citizenship decree approved by the government on March 27.
In a statement, Porta said that the amendment submission phase is still ongoing, with a deadline of April 16. “There is no agreement in Parliament on the decree. We are working to present modifications with the support of parliamentarians in the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate,” he said.
The demonstration was motivated by a post circulating on social media with incorrect information. The publication claims that there was a “partial victory” with the exclusion of retroactivity of the new rule and that the two-generation limit for the transmission of citizenship would only be valid from March 28, 2025.
The text also attributes to Porta an alleged statement made to the Senate's WebTV at 14:25 PM Rome time, which the parliamentarian categorically denied. "I am no longer a senator and I did not give an interview to that TV station. This information was fabricated," he stated.
According to Porta, the opposition is still mobilized to modify the main points of the decree, including the limitation to two generations and the requirement of birth in Italy as a criterion for transmitting citizenship. “We want to preserve the rights of those who have already filed the processes and expand the scope to future generations,” he said.
The deputy highlighted that there is also dialogue with parties that support the government, and that the support of associations in Brazil and Argentina has been fundamental. “This mobilization can pressure parliamentarians from the majority to review their position. We are attentive and working together,” he told Italianism.
