Italy in Brazil

In Brazil, 88,99% voted “Yes” in the Italian referendum

In Brazil, 88,99% voted for "Yes" in the Italian referendum

Result shows that Italians in Brazil feel little, or not at all, represented

If the victory of “Yes”, in constitutional referendum on the reduction of deputies and senators in Italy, with more than 69% of the votes, reflects the public aversion to current politicians, what about those Italians abroad, especially in Brazil?

88,99% voted “Yes”. The overwhelming result clearly shows that the “we are going to lose representatives” speech did not convince Italian citizens residing in the country.

In fact, Brazil was the electoral college – in the so-called “southern america” – where preferences for 'Yes' were higher in percentage.

Around 22,65% of the 399.251 citizens entitled to vote sent their ballots to consulates and embassies; 478 voters returned blanks and 8.887 annulled.

According to data from Ministry of Internal Affairs, 72.137 voted for “Yes” and 8.928 chose “No” (11,01%).

With the reform, the Chamber of Deputies loses weight, now having 400 deputies instead of 630, in the next legislature.

There will be 200 senators instead of the current 315, with estimated annual savings of 50 million euros.

The cut will also affect Italian parliamentarians elected abroad, from 18 (12 deputies and 6 senators) to 12 (8 deputies and 4 senators).

Currently, South America elects four deputies and two senators to the Parliament of Italy, but the new distribution has not yet been defined.
