Italy's Court of Cassation authorized, this Thursday (12), a referendum on Italian citizenship through naturalization, which proposes reducing the required residency time for non-EU foreigners from 10 to 5 years, without affecting citizenship iure sanguinis (right of blood).
The measure aims to facilitate naturalization, benefiting thousands of immigrants, especially those seeking better opportunities in Italy.

However, the proposal also faces opposition. Some political groups and sectors of Italian society question the reduction in residence time, arguing that it could affect social cohesion and the readiness of new citizens to fully integrate into Italian society.
Now, all that remains is to wait for the date of the popular consultation.
