The Ivrea Public Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation to investigate the Italian for culpable excess of self-defense
Italy's Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini on Friday (7) praised a shopkeeper who shot dead a man who was trying to rob his store in Pavone Canavese, in the Piedmont region.
“Total solidarity with the trader, who I hope can take advantage of the new self-defense law,” said Salvini on his Twitter profile. The case reignited discussions about the new self-defense law, a project by Salvini's nationalist and far-right Northern League party. The law determines that personal defense is “always” legitimate, and that the “proportionality between offense and defense always exists” if the attack occurs in the victim’s home or work. With this, the League tried to prevent a citizen who kills a robber, for example, from being punished due to a disproportionate reaction. And that is precisely what could happen to the merchant from Piedmont, identified as Marcellino Iacho Bonvin, aged 67.
The Ivrea Prosecutor's Office opened an investigation to investigate the Italian for culpable excess of self-defense.
Bonvin, who lives in a property above his store, a tobacconist, noticed that three men were trying to rob the establishment during the early hours of yesterday (7). The criminals broke into the store and, in a van, managed to steal around 2 thousand euros. Upon noticing the robbery, the merchant shot the trio with a pistol. One of the robbers – a 24-year-old man from Moldova – died. The other two managed to escape.
