The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, stated last Saturday (28) that environmental protection and the issue of climate change have been inadequately addressed for a long time.
The president participated in a United Nations (UN) seminar on climate change in Bonn, Germany.
“For too long we have inadequately addressed the issue of environmental protection and climate change, artificially contrasting the reasons for managing what exists with those of the future of our children and grandchildren,” Mattarella said at the event.
“This is inadequate. We thought we could tackle this in no particular order, with our eyes on past discoveries, with common resources and obsolete tools,” he added.
The Head of State also highlighted the “urgency of an energy transition that must be concrete, pragmatic, sustainable and effective”.
In his speech, Mattarella noted that climate “is a challenge for innovation in which the future is at stake”, regardless of the fact that the impact of the European Union on global ecological stability is less relevant than that of other industrial giants that contribute decisively to polluting the planet.
“The increase in the frequency of natural disasters is before everyone’s eyes and affects all aspects of our lives, devastating entire territories and causing victims,” he concluded. (HANDLE)
