Alstom and Snam signed a partnership to use hydrogen in the country
An agreement signed by the Italian railway operator Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) with the largest natural gas transport group in Europe, Snam, intends to make the use of hydrogen in the transport network via trains “FS”.
The agreement, according to a publication by Reuters, turns out to be historic.
This is the first time that a state-owned railway company and an energy group have formalized an agreement aimed at using hydrogen as a possible solution to meet climate goals.
Alstom will manufacture and maintain hydrogen-powered trains newly built or converted, while Snam will develop the necessary infrastructure for the production, transport and refueling of the fuel.
“We believe in hydrogen,” says Michele Viale, Director of Alstom Italy. “That’s why we signed a partnership with Snam. We hope that Coradia iLint hydrogen trains will also become a reality in Italy.” Italy shortly. Thanks to a partner like Snam, we will be able to respond to the market, offering a complete solution,” she says.
Eco-friendly trains
The two companies officially announced that they are setting up a working group to evaluate pilot projects aimed at replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen on the national railway network.
The European Commission has outlined guidelines to expand production and use of the gas to help fully neutralize emissions by 2050.
Snam has been experimenting with a 10% hydrogen blend in part of its extensive natural gas network, and said 70% of it is already made up of “hydrogen-ready” pipes, which would facilitate distribution of the fuel in Italy.
