The Italian island of Capri will ban, from May, single-use and non-biodegradable plastics, such as cutlery, plates, cups and food containers, according to a municipal law approved by the local council.
The objective of this new regulation is “to reduce the problem of pollution, improve selective waste collection and, obviously, contribute to the care of the environment”, explained the municipal leader of the island in the Campania region, Gianni De Martino.
The ban comes into force on the island on May 15, at the start of the summer season, and will be applied to the entire territory, especially on the beaches and coastal strip, which are the most affected by plastic waste pollution in the island. sea.
Capri, which has a population of just over 7.000, is one of Italy's most popular holiday destinations and for several years a tourist tax has been imposed to preserve the environment.
