Ellen's family tree is evidence of dual Italian and Irish ancestry. Her paternal grandparents, Angelo Pompeo (1910–1998) and Marie J. Burnham (1915–1995), established firm roots in the United States. Her great-grandparents, Giuseppe Pompeo (1880–1936) and Isabella Dell'Erario (1881–1963), are direct links to Gesualdo.

On her mother's side, the Irish influence was also significant. Ellen's mother, Kathleen B. O'Keefe, was of Irish descent. This mix of European cultures created a solid foundation for the actress's education.
