The 2025 edition of the Venice Carnival, which will be held between February 14 and March 4 across the metropolitan area of the northern Italian city, will be dedicated to the writer and adventurer Giacomo Casanova.
The Italian is considered one of the greatest sources of information about the customs and habits of 18th century social life, in addition to being known as the greatest seducer in history due to his famous love life.

Entitled “The Time of Casanova”, the tribute was announced this Tuesday (3) during an event at Ca' Farsetti, headquarters of the lagoon municipality, in the presence of the mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro.
“Carnival is an idea of irony and playfulness, behind which there is much to reflect on. We have been pushing for it to become a popular event again and at the same time continue to be a highly regarded event on a global level. And to do this, we must involve the entire city,” said the Italian mayor.
For artistic director Massimo Checchetto, Casanova “was an elusive character, a person always linked to Venice, although he traveled all over Europe, living the life of that time to the fullest”.
He is famous for his adventures and free spirit, which are reflected in the design and activities of Carnival. The celebrations will be inspired by this famous libertine, allowing participants to explore and relive a century full of excitement and discovery.
The carnival will begin in Piazza San Marco, on “Valentine’s Day”, a date celebrated by couples in love throughout much of the world, with a great nighttime show dedicated to love.
Afterwards, there will be a masked procession from Punta della Dogana to Rialto, with a big party in Erbaria.
The extensive presentations of the “Carnival Street Show” have also been confirmed, “a destination increasingly sought after by artists who want to perform in the city”, specified Vela's operational director, Fabrizio D'Oria.
There will also be space for the traditional “Festa das Marias”, the shows at the Arsenale – with 18 performances – and the parades of floats. The events will be based on the two large stages that will be set up in San Marco and Piazza Ferretto. (HANDLE)
