This Wednesday, December 11, the Chamber of Deputies will vote on the reciprocal recognition of driver's licenses between Brazil and Italy, a significant step towards making life easier for Brazilians living in the European country and Italians in Brazil.
The agreement, signed in July 2024 during the visit of Italian President Sergio Mattarella, provides for the direct conversion of the Brazilian National Driver's License (CNH) into an Italian license, and vice-versa, without the need to take theoretical or practical exams.
Although already signed, the agreement between Brazil and Italy depends on approval by the National Congress to come into effect. Wednesday's vote will be an important milestone in determining whether the rules will come into effect in 2025 — in Italy it has already been approved.
Facilities for Brazilians and Italians
The agreement allows Brazilian drivers who have resided in Italy for less than six years to convert their driving licenses to categories A and B directly in Vehicle registration, the body responsible for local traffic. Italians in Brazil will be able to carry out the same procedure based on the rules established by detran in each state.
