What is the favorite food of Italians? For 4 out of 10 Italians, pasta was the most cooked food in the last year, ahead of... pizza and focaccia (19%) and of meat main dishes (15%).
The search "Os Italians and the consumption of pasta” carried out by Doxa/Unione Italiana Food aimed to investigate the new normality of Italians who fight for a different management of meals in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The focus also took into account “new forms of family socialization” and “the relationship between Italians and the spaghetti&co".
Italians' favorite food: the study
The study was carried out in May 2021 on a national sample of 1.000 individuals (500 men and 500 women), between 18 and 74 years old.
The results showed that, for 6 out of 10 Italians, pasta is the most shared meal of the day and for 8 out of 10 Italians this specific food is always eaten in the company of someone.
According to the research, pasta ended up being “the king of dinner in company”, although for 63% of Italians, the dish continues to be consumed mainly at lunch.
Pasta for dinner: the expert's comment
Nutritionist Michelangelo Giampietro, in some statements reported by 'Ansa', commented: “Eating pasta for dinner It is a wise choice and promoted by science. The presence of tryptophan in carbohydrates, associated with amino acids, increases the production of serotonin in the brain and the consequent state of psychological well-being, facilitating falling asleep and quality sleep.”

Pasta with Tuna and Olives
In fourth place, with 16% of preferences, was the pasta with tuna and olives (pasta with tonno and olive).
Rigatoni with meat sauce
On the lowest step of the podium in this special ranking dedicated to Italians' favorite food is rigatoni al ragù (type of short pasta, with meat sauce), indicated by 22% of respondents.
Carbonara
A carbonara, one of the most famous recipes from central Italy, was mentioned by 26% of those interviewed, but had to “settle” for second place. The favorite food of Italians is something else.
Spaghetti with tomato sauce
Italians' favorite pasta dish according to research carried out by Doxa/Unione Italiana Food? The classic spaghetti with tomato sauce (spaghetti al pomodoro), recommended by 33% of those surveyed.
