Whether registering residency or opening a bank account, foreigners living in Italy face a bureaucracy with its own vocabulary. Understanding the key terms used in official documents can save time and avoid mistakes.

In this guide, we've compiled essential expressions for anyone who needs to fill out documents or deal with Italian government agencies.

Most common documents

Certificate is the generic term for “certificate”. It may appear as certificate of residence, which proves the address in the municipality; birth certificate ou marriage certificate, which attest to birth and marriage; or certificate of sporting suitability, required by gyms and sports clubs.

Declaration, or declaration, is present in documents such as the tax return (income tax return) or Self-declaration, a self-declaration used in various situations.

Pay slip, the payroll, is requested as proof of income in many procedures.

Contract refers to contracts, such as permanent contract (no fixed term) or lease agreement (rental), which can be short-term, transitional or standard four-year.

Name, last name (surname), date of birth (date of birth) and birth place (city where you were born) are among the first pieces of information requested.

Nationality (nationality), residential address (address), via (street name), House number (house number), POSTAL CODE (CEP) and province are also common.
