Almost 40% of retirees earn up to a thousand euros in Italy

Number equivalent to 6,4 million people

The Observatory of the Italian National Institute of Social Security (INPS) reported this Friday (28) that 6,4 million retirees live on an income of less than a thousand euros per month.

The number represents the largest range of single pensions, with 39,6% of the total number of those who receive the benefit in the country.

Of these, around 2,03 million earn less than 500 euros per month and another 4,36 million earn between 500 and a thousand euros. For 38,8%, the monthly amount is in the range between 1,5 euros and 2 euros.

The account includes those who receive more than one type of retirement, as there are five types of benefit in the country: due to age, disability, survivors, compensation and social assistance. If only one type of these categories is considered, the number of people receiving less than a thousand euros rises to 64,6% of the total (around 15 million people).

Another interesting fact from the report is the difference in payments between genders. Although women make up the majority of retirees (52,8%), they receive less than men in all value ranges. Among those who receive the least, they represent 48,3% against 29,8%. Among the largest pensions, above 3 thousand euros per month, there are only 273.127 women compared to 780.480 men.
