La Sapienza University in Rome was voted the best higher education institution in the world for “Classical Studies and Ancient History”.
This is what the 11th edition of the QS World University Ranking by Subject says, released on Wednesday (3) by the British analysis company Quacquarelli Symond.
In the ranking, the Italian university surpasses the British Oxford, which now appears in second place among the best global institutions.
QS higher education experts analyzed the performance of 452 fields of study at 52 Italian universities. Overall, however, 13.883 degree programs from 1.440 institutions across 51 disciplines were studied.

In total, eight of the 50 best universities in the world for “Classical Studies and Ancient History” are from Italy. Only the United States has more institutions (12) among the top 50 that appear in the rankings for this discipline.
The results also indicate that the higher education sector in Italy stands out, in particular, in the subjects “Arts and Humanities” and “Social Sciences and Management”.
According to QS, the Luigi Bocconi Commercial University it is the seventh best in the world in “Business and Management” studies and is in 14th place in “Accounting and Finance”.
“The results achieved by Italy this year show that, in addition to offering a world-class education in subjects historically present in university curricula, – there is no better destination in continental Europe for students passionate about Classical Studies – Italian universities have been able to tackle masterfully tackle pressing contemporary challenges,” said Ben Sowter, vice president of QS Professional Services.
