O Italian Ministry of Education published a circular this Tuesday (20) prohibiting the use of cell phones and similar electronic devices in classrooms across the country. The document does not provide for punishments and authorizes use only with “didactic purposes".
According to the circular signed by the minister Joseph Vallettara, the use of cell phones is “an element of distraction for oneself and others and a lack of respect towards the teaching staff, to whom it is a priority to return authority”.
The document ratifies decisions already adopted in 1998, by Student Statute, and 2007, by another ministerial circular.
“The interest of the students that we need to protect is to stay in the classroom to learn and being distracted by the cell phone does not allow them to follow the lessons in a fruitful way, in addition to a lack of respect for the role of the teacher. The common interest that I want to follow is that of a serious school, which puts learning and commitment at the center”, added the minister.
Regarding the lack of any type of sanction, the ultra-right politician stated that he expects a “sense of responsibility”, but allowed schools to guarantee “respect for the norms in force” with the creation of their own rules “if necessary”. (HANDLE).
