The Bekaert factory in Macchiareddu, in the province of Cagliari, is to be bought by Nuova Icom, a Sardinian company operating in industrial facilities. The memorandum of understanding foresees the acquisition of the site, specialized in the production of metal cords for tires, and part of the equipment, with the reabsorption of all 160 workers, reported the newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore.
The agreement emerged from negotiations led by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy (Mimit). Minister Adolfo Urso said that another difficult case of industrial crisis in Sardinia is moving towards a concrete solution and stated that the unions will provide their assessment. According to him, the ministry and the region will support the project with all the necessary instruments. All aspects of the operation will be detailed at a meeting already scheduled at the ministry for September 2nd.
The plant employs more than 230 workers, both directly and indirectly. The crisis was attributed to high energy and transportation costs, with freight costs three times higher than competitors, according to the company, in addition to the crisis in the automotive sector and Chinese competition in the European market, as pointed out by the unions. Fiom, FSM, and UIL issued the warning after the company announced its decision to sell the factory.
