Giuseppe Conte leads in the confidence of the center-left electorate in Italy, with 36%, ahead of Alessandro Onorato, with 32%, and Silvia Salis, with 30%. Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, came in fourth place, with 29%. The figures are from a survey by the Piepoli Institute presented on the Omnibus program on the La7 channel, reported the newspaper Il Messaggero.
The survey does not deal with primaries; it only measures which names from the so-called broad field have the most confidence among voters. Coalition primaries should only be discussed from the end of September, when the bloc will decide whether to take the dispute to internal elections in November or at the beginning of 2027. Italian parliamentary elections are scheduled for 2027.
Conte is a former prime minister and currently leads the Five Star Movement. Other polls had already indicated him as the favorite in potential internal opposition consultations. Onorato is the municipal secretary of Rome Capital and was not on the list presented in the program: his percentage came from a previous poll, according to the institute. Salis is the mayor of Genoa. Following them are Nicola Fratoianni, six points behind Schlein, and Angelo Bonelli, eight points behind. Below 20% were Matteo Renzi, with 17%, and Riccardo Magi, with 14%.
