According to the AISE news agency, the Italian Minister of Labor, Marina Calderone, participated in the ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Marcinelle tragedy in Belgium, representing the Italian government. The accident killed 262 miners, 136 of whom were Italian. Calderone stated that "memory cannot be ritualistic: it must be fertile" and emphasized that remembering the dead implies a permanent commitment to the safety of living workers, in Italy and in Europe.

The minister cited measures adopted by Italy to strengthen health and safety at work, such as the reintroduction of the crime of illegal labor procurement and the increase in inspection teams.
