The Italian Consulate General in São Paulo has announced that appointments for submitting documentation for Italian citizenship applications for minors under the benefit of the law will be completed by the end of 2026. and that new dates, relating to the first months of 2027, will be made available in the coming months.
The information was provided by the consulate itself in response to a reader on the agency's Instagram profile, who asked when new positions would be opened.
"Appointments are fully booked until the end of the year. In the coming months, we will make appointments available for the first months of 2027," the consulate responded.
In the same message, the agency reassured those who had already obtained certificates and other documents. According to the consulate, The documentation already issued will remain valid.without prejudice to those interested due to the staggered opening of vacancies.
The Supreme Court reaffirmed: citizenship is born with the person.
- New legal front opened
- Processes can still be filed.
- Individual assessment before any decision.

New job openings may become available between September and October.
The response does not specify a date for the next opening of the calendar. However, by stating that the first months of 2027 will be available "in the coming months," it indicates that a new round of scheduling could occur as early as September or October.
However, this is a prediction based on the consulate's response, and not an officially announced timeline.
The consulate itself states that upcoming openings will be announced in advance through its official channels, including its institutional website and social media.
The official page dedicated to minor children currently states that places will be made available progressively through Prenot@Mi, with the aim of serving all applicants within the deadlines stipulated by law.
What is citizenship by benefit of law?
This rule emerged with the changes introduced to Italian legislation in 2025. In certain cases, minor children born abroad no longer automatically acquired Italian citizenship from birth.
For these minors, citizenship is acquired through a declaration of intent from their parents or guardian, accompanied by the documentation required by the consulate.
The legal effect is also different: in these cases, the minor acquires the citizenship by "benefit of law", with effects starting from the day after the declaration is submitted, and not as an Italian citizen from birth.
The rule does not apply indiscriminately to all children of Italians. There are situations in which the minor continues to be considered a citizen. jure sanguinis, including when certain conditions stipulated in the new legislation are met.
The deadline has been extended until 2029.
A change approved in 2026 reduced the pressure on families who had young children before the reform came into effect.
For minors who were already minors when the new law came into effect, parents can submit the declaration and documentation. until May 31, 2029.
For children born on or after May 25, 2025, the declaration must be submitted. within three years of birth, or from the date on which affiliation is established in the cases provided for by law.
The extension of the deadline allowed the Consulate in São Paulo to abandon the emergency system initially adopted and organize the gradual opening of slots through Prenot@Mi. In a previous statement, the consulate itself stated that it intended to maintain an open and continuous schedule, designed to accommodate a larger number of applicants.
Documents already issued remain valid.
Another important point in the response sent to the reader is the validity of the certificates already obtained.
The Constitutional Court's decision changed the landscape. The new citizenship law will now be reviewed by the European Union's courts of justice.
The consulate reiterated that The issued documents remain valid.Even if the delivery is delayed until 2027.
The same guidance had already been issued previously by the Consulate in São Paulo, which stated that it was not necessary to reissue the documentation simply because the appointment was postponed.
This is particularly relevant for families who started preparing certificates, translations, and apostilles when the legislation established a much shorter deadline for the declaration.
Now, those who didn't get a spot for 2026 will have to keep an eye on the next openings in the calendar.
