The Italian government is set to increase funding for the promotion of the Italian language and culture abroad. This measure is part of a new package of amendments to the budget law, currently under discussion in the Senate Budget Committee, and is included in a set of microfinance initiatives focused on social and educational goals.
In total, an additional €500.000 per year will be allocated in 2026 and 2027 to support Italian language and culture courses outside of Italy. This budget increase is primarily aimed at the so-called "managing entities," organizations responsible for providing these courses. Classes for descendants of Italians and those interested in learning the language.
Furthermore, an additional €1 million per year was announced for the same period to strengthen Italian schools abroad. These funds can be used to finance scholarships for young people with Italian citizenship or proven Italian ancestry.
According to the text, the objective is "strengthening Italian interests abroad" and expand actions aimed at Italian citizens living abroad. The measure addresses a long-standing demand of Italian community around the world and the institutions that work to spread the language.
The amendments are part of the first set of modifications to the 2026-2027 Budget Law, which also includes actions in the areas of health, education, combating obesity, pediatric mobility, events against antisemitism, among others.
