Health authorities report the highest number of victims in the last six months
The Italian Ministry of Health reported, this Wednesday (21), an increase of 15.199 new Covid-19 infections, for a total of 449.648 since the start of the pandemic.
The official death toll points to 127 more in the last 24 hours, the highest record since May 22, when 130 were reported. According to Italian authorities, the total number of victims is, at this point, 36.832.
The region of Lombardia records the highest number of positive cases, totaling 4.126 more infected.
No control
The consultant for the Italian Ministry of Health, Walter Ricciardi, admitted today, however, that the pandemic is already “out of control” in some metropolitan areas of the country, such as Milan (north), Naples (south) and the capital Roma, and as such, the expert stressed, more forceful measures will be necessary.
“Some areas, like Milan, Naples and probably Roma, are already out of control from the point of view of controlling the pandemic, they have numbers that are too high to be blocked with the traditional method of testing and tracking”, said the consultant during a conference held at an Italian university.
Walter Ricciardi, who is part of the Italian delegation to the World Health Organization (WHO), pointed out that, and as history shows, “when a virus cannot be contained, it must be mitigated”.
Therefore, in the expert's opinion, it is necessary to “block the mobility” of people to reduce the chances of contagion.
