Coronavirus contagion has stopped growing in Italy, index shows

The coronavirus (Sars-CoV-2) contamination rate in Italy is around 0,8 on the R0 scale, a mathematical model capable of calculating the degree of contagiousness of the virus.

The contagion number below 1 indicates that the epidemic is no longer expanding, said the president of Italy's Superior Health Council, Franco Locatelli.

Called the basic reproduction number, or R0, it is used to calculate how many healthy people someone who is sick is capable of infecting. Currently, the contagiousness rate is between 0,83 and 0,78, Locatelli said.

According to him, to maintain these levels and reduce them, Italy needs to employ 5 tools: tracking those infected, use of tests, personal protective equipment, permanence of field hospitals, implementation of the effectiveness of territorial medicine, in addition to the responsibility of each citizen, with social distancing measures.

It is based on the R0 index that health authorities decide to relax restrictive rules against the virus.
