At least five Brazilians are being investigated for false residency in Italian citizenship recognition processes. The case occurred in... Lonigo, in the province of Vicenza, in Veneto, and was exposed by Guardia di Finanza, a special police force in Italy directly subordinate to the Minister of Economy and Finance.
The agents of Noventa Vicentina, noticing the high number of cases in the municipality, focused their investigations on five requests that required a faster administrative procedure for the recognition of Italian citizenship via swear sanguinis (Right of blood). These individuals obtained an Italian passport after being registered in the resident register.
According to the note from the Guardia di Finanza, the Lonigo Local Police had denied the certificate of habitual residence, indicating to the municipality the absence of basic requirements.
Despite this opposition, the official, between 2018 and 2019, continued to enroll these Brazilians in the resident registry, allowing them to obtain the Italian citizenship.
Investigations by Noventa Vicentina agents, which included witness statements, acquisition of documents and verification of telephone records, concluded that the process followed by the municipal employee (which is no longer in service at Lonigo) it was illicit and tainted with falsehood.
He was denounced for violating articles 476 and 479 of the Italian penal code, which provide, in case of conviction, a prison sentence of up to six years.
