Distribution by regions
Most voters are in Europe. There are 2.883.122 registered voters in the AIRE system, in addition to 12.371 temporarily residing abroad.
In South America, there are 1.784.382 voters. In the United States, there are 551 temporary employees. In North and Central America, there are 477.466 registered employees and 858 temporary employees.
In the regions of Asia, Africa, Oceania, and Antarctica, the total reaches 272.142 registered in the Aire program and 3.052 temporary workers.
Reasons for voting by mail
Among temporary voters, work and study are the main reasons. There are 6.092 Italians abroad for work and 7.810 for study.
Another 77 requested to be excused from voting for health reasons. There are also 890 family members living with the deceased and 2.323 members of the armed forces and police on duty.
Consular attestation
Among those who vote with consular authorization, the largest concentration is in South America, with 24.086 voters.
Europe has 13.163 voters. North and Central America have 3.559. Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Antarctica together account for 2.507 voters.
Logistics and accounting
The ballots sent from abroad will be transported to Italy on more than 80 flights organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The vote count will take place alongside the votes in Italy, starting at 15 pm on Monday the 23rd. For this purpose, 2.066 polling stations will be set up.
The votes from Europe will be distributed between Milan, Bologna, and Florence. The ballots from South America will be counted in Rome. The votes from North and Central America, as well as Africa, Asia, Oceania, and Antarctica, will be sent to Naples.
Countries without postal voting
In 21 countries, there is no postal voting, including Afghanistan, Haiti, Ukraine, and Syria.
In these cases, voters need to travel to Italy to vote. The government is providing discounts to facilitate travel.
Due to the crisis in the Middle East, Italians who have returned from Iran and Bahrain will be able to vote directly in Italy.
