Between mergers, new denominations and unchanged territories: the proposal from PD parliamentarians
The old proposal of Democratic Party (PD) to reduce the number of regions in Italy from 20 to 12 appears to be back.
“I would agree with the discussion on reviewing the number of Italian regions,” said Stefano Bonaccini, governor of Emilia-Romagna, also from the PD, during a meeting with other Italian governors, this Saturday (22), as reported by the news agency Italpress.
Gathered in Rimini, the Emilia Romagna and Lombardy, they discuss the issue of the relationship State-Regions, which was shaken during the health emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
During the lockdown, until the country reopened, there were many reasons for friction between governors and the executive.
The new map
It was 2015, when Raffaele Ranucci, businessman and PD representative in the Senate, proposed an agenda, accepted by the government, with the aim of carrying out a constitutional review and reducing the regions (which are like the States in Brazil).
The objective was to change Italian borders, going from 20 regions to 12: Toscana, Umbria and the province of Viterbo would thus have formed the region of Apennines, while the Piedmont, Aosta Valley and Liguria would have come together to form the region of Alpes. Trentino Alto-Adige, Friuli Venezia Giulia e Veneto would have given life to Triveneto.
The region of Adriatic would be created from the union of Abruzzo, Brands and some territories of Molise e Lazio.
The regions of Lombardia, Sicilia e Sardinia they would be the only ones who would be saved from the changes planned by the PD representatives.
At that time, the reduction proposal did not go ahead.
